Italian navy officers on Friday rescued at least 175 illegal African migrants who were attempting to find entry into Europe through Italy. The navy officers rescued the Eritrean, Ethiopian and Somali migrants after their three vessels ran out of fuel and water 120 miles off the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa. Each year, thousands of Africans risk their lives to attempt a treacherous cross into Europe via Italy or Malta using makeshift vessels.[PE]
