Reports Say Zimbabwe Deal Will Give Mugabe Amnesty
A deal to resolve Zimbabwe’s political crisis may hand real power to Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai in exchange for amnesty for President Robert Mugabe, a newspaper has reported. According to the South African “Star”, Tsvangirai will run Zimbabwe as executive Prime Minister for a transitional period leading to fresh elections, while Mugabe remains a ceremonial President with diminished powers, immune from prosecution upon retirement and honoured as the "founding father of the nation". The newspaper claims to have obtained a copy of the draft agreement. [PE]
