Poll Fears As Guinea Bissau Opposition Quits Unity Govt

A withdrawal of a key opposition party from Guinea Bissau’s unity government has sparked off fears of possible instability in the country’s upcoming presidential elections, which are scheduled for November. The opposition African Party for the Independence of Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde (PAIGC) withdrew from the unity government on July 25 after Prime Minister Marthinho Ndafa Kabi unilaterally sacked four of its top officials from government. The short-lived unity government was formed in March 2007 to stabilize the country after decades of coups and uprisings. [PE]
