At least four people were killed Wednesday when rival militant groups clashed in Nigeria’s oil rich Delta region. Nigerian military spokesman Lt.-Col Sagir Musa said the clash was an apparent turf war between fighters loyal to two factional leaders of the restive region’s main militant group, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND). A federal army deployment sent to quell the fighting was ambushed by the militants, leading to a gunfight in which a soldier, two militants and a civilian were killed. [PE]
