Sudan Condemns 8 Darfur Rebels to Death
Eight Darfur rebel fighters were sentenced to death Tuesday by a special court convened in Khartoum to try suspects arrested over their role in an unprecedented May attack on the Sudanese capital. The eight were found guilty of being among members of Darfur’s rebel Justice and Equality Movement who perpetrated the attack, which killed over 200 combatants and civilians in Khartoum on May 10. The verdicts come a fortnight after Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir was indicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for masterminding genocide and war crimes in Darfur [PE].
