Kenya Urged to Investigate Torture in Anti-Militia Operation
Human Rights Watch (HRW) has urged the Kenyan government to investigate allegations of torture and war crimes during a military operation it carried out earlier this year against a violent militia group in the country’s Mt Elgon Area. Launching a report documenting two years of alleged abuses by both the Mt Elgon militia and the security forces, HRW’s lead researcher Ben Lawrence said a public inquiry should be set up to investigate the claims. Kenya’s Police spokesman Eric Kiraithe however defended the security forces, saying they were compiling a comprehensive report that would soon absolve them of any wrongdoing. [PE]
