17 July 2008
The commander of the Nigerian Army’s Guards Brigade says his soldiers are committed to protecting the country’s presidency and nation. Brigadier-General Babagana Mungonu made the remarks while closing an annual shooting range classification exercise held at the country’s Shittu Alao Barracks. Nigeria has historically been plagued by a succession of post-independence military coups, and only returned to stable civilian rule with the democratic election of former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999.
