ICC Formally Charges Bashir with Genocide
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has formally filed genocide charges against Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir. ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo filed the charges Monday, formally accusing Bashir of 10 counts of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in Darfur. The prosecutor also called for Bashir’s arrest to prevent the deaths of those still under attack in Darfur. Meanwhile, thousands of Bashir’s supporters held a demonstration in Khartoum Sunday, protesting against the Sudanese leader’s censure by the ICC. Meanwhile the country’s National Congress Party has warned that there will be more violence in Darfur if the President was indicted. [P.E]
