Nigerian Teachers Strike Continues for Second Week
Public schools remain closed for the second week in Nigeria, as a countrywide teachers’ strike continues with no sign of abating. The strike began on June 30, when the teachers suspended work to force the government to implement a promised pay deal. Nigeria’s government has insisted that it will only pay the new salary to teachers in federal schools, but won’t force state and local authorities to implement the increase. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s powerful Labor Congress has threatened to call a general strike in support of the teachers if the government fails to resolve the dispute fast.
