Somali PM Calls for Deployment of UN troops
July 8, 2008
8 July 2008
Somali Prime Minister Nur Hassan Hussein has called on the United Nations to deploy a peacekeeping force to his country without delay. Hussein says insecurity is likely to rise given the impending departure of Ethiopian troops as demanded by a UN-brokered peace agreement reached last month in Djibouti. Islamist opposition leaders demanded the departure of the Ethiopian troops – which have largely kept Somalia’s fragile interim government in power - before agreeing to ink the peace agreement. [PE]
