Elusive Ugandan Rebel Leader Asks for Meeting

7 July 2008 - News From Africa
Uganda’s elusive rebel leader, Joseph Kony, has finally spoken out and expressed his willingness to sing a peace deal. Kony reportedly made contact with UN Envoy Joaquim Chisanno via satellite phone and asked for a meeting with the rest of the negotiation team. Two years of peace talks collapsed in April when Kony declined to sign a peace deal between his Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and the Ugandan government, prompting Uganda, Sudan and DRC to threaten a joint military campaign against the guerillas.
