Zambian President Mwanawasa Dies
Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa has died. Mwanawasa, 59, was taken ill at an African Union summit in Sharm-el Sheikh, Egypt, where he suffered a mild stroke on June 29.He was later flown to a private hospital in Paris, where he died Thursday. Mwanawasa, who won reelection for a second term as President in 2006, was widely praised for his free-market policies and high profile war against official corruption. Zambian Vice President Rupiah Banda is expected to be sworn in as acting President according to the country’s constitution. [P.E.]
