South Sudanese Military Put on Alert over Ugandan Rebels
3 june 2008
South Sudan has put its military on high alert to guard civilians against attacks by fighters from Uganda’s rebel Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). South Sudanese Vice President Riek Machar said Wednesday that his semi-autonomous region’s Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) has been ordered to shoot anyone carrying arms outside designated rebel assembly points. The directive follows an LRA attack on a South Sudanese military camp near Sudan’s border with Congo on June 4, which claimed at least 27 civilian lives.
