Burundi Rebels, Govt Pledge to Restore Peace
Burundi’s last rebel leader Agathon Rwasa and the Burundi government have pledged to restore peace to their country after 15 years of intermittent civil war. The two sides released a joint statement Sunday, ahead of a two-day parley between the two parties in South Africa. Sources say the discussions will be attended by representatives from the UN, African Union and European Union. South African President Thabo Mbeki is also expected to meet Rwasa and possibly organise a meeting between him and Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza. [P.E]
