Rioting Guinean soldiers Monday kidnapped the country’s deputy army chief and are reportedly holding him hostage at the Alpha Yaya Diallo barracks in the capital, Conakry. The soldiers are protesting the sacking of Prime Minister Lansana Kouyate, who had promised to address their grievances over low wages. Kouyate was fired by Guinean President Lansana Conté last week.
