Sudan Govt Accused of Torture after Khartoum Rebel Attack
The Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), which is a coalition partner in Sudan’s national government, last Sunday joined hands with several human rights and political groups to accuse the state of arbitrary arrest and torture of civilians in the aftermath of a recent attack on Khartoum by Darfur rebels. SPLM Deputy Secretary General Yasir Arman urged the government to particularly stop arresting Darfuris, alleging that an ‘unknown’ number of Darfuris were currently under detention. On May 10, Darfur’s rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) staged an unprecedented attack on the Sudanese capital before being repelled by the country’s army. At least 200 combatants and civilians died in the clash. [P.E]
