Kenya Backbenchers Vow to Form Formal Opposition
Legislators left out of Kenya’s coalition cabinet Sunday vowed to push on with their effort to form a formal parliamentary opposition group despite fierce resistance from the cabinet. Seven legislators led by Deputy Government Chief Whip Johnson Muthama declared in Mombasa that their quest was unstoppable, while another 11 MPs led by Budalangi legislator Ababu Namwamba held a rally at Port Victoria, Western Province, where they declared that they would rally the support of the Kenyan public. Last week, the cabinet unanimously resolved to oppose the scheme, which it believes will weaken the unity administration that was formed to end an intensely violent post election standoff. [P.E]
