South African President Thabo Mbeki Wednesday authorized his country’s army to help end attacks on African immigrants, which police say have claimed 42 lives since May 11. About 400 perpetrators have been detained over the xenophobic attacks that began in Gauteng, where poor South Africans accused the foreigners of stealing their jobs and fuelling crime. [P.E]
