20 May 2008 - News From Africa
The Ugandan government has dropped a proposed amendment that would have empowered the state to regulate all customary land in the country. The controversial proposal had met widespread opposition from the Acholi, Lango, Teso, Karamoja and Busoga sub regions, which insisted that their own traditional systems were more effective in the administration of land issues. Prime Minister Apolo Nsibambi has already communicated the cabinet’s decision to scrap the amendment to a parliamentary committee mandated to review the Land Bill. (PE)
