6 May 2008 - News From Africa

A Congolese warlord is being sought for prosecution, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has revealed. The arrest warrant for Bosco Ntaganda was issued in 2006 and he is still at large. A BBC News report says that he is accused of recruiting children under the age of 15 to fight in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

ICC judges say as deputy head of military operations for the rebel Patriotic Forces for the Liberation of the Congo (FPLC), Ntaganda was responsible for seven camps where children were trained. He is also accused of taking part in FPLC attacks when the group used child soldiers. The Citizen reports that Ntaganda was thought to be active in the eastern Kivu regions as chief of staff of another militia group, the National Congress for the Defence of the people (CNDP). The court added that the CNDP was also under investigation after 'credible reports' concerning sexual crimes of cruelty'. The warrant against Ntaganda is the fourth issued by the ICC judges. The other three suspects are already in custody awaiting trial.
