Hunt for missing editor continues
Police have launched an intensive hunt for the founder and editor of the
private bi-monthly newspaper, Kinyarwanda Umuco. Bonaventure Bizumuremyi,
who is wanted 'for insulting the President', went into hiding a few days
ago, shortly before police raided his house in Kigali. Police have visited
the editor's home in central Kigali at least six times since his
disappearance. However, they have taken away most of his documents,
compact discs, and mobile phones. The Nation reports that Bizumuremyi's
mother and sister were also picked up from their home and interrogated in
connection with his whereabouts. Police spokesperson Willy Higiro appealed
to the public to help track down Bizumuremyi. The defamation charges stem
from three articles in the 12 March edition of the Kinyarwanda Umuco,
which were critical of national leaders.
