Tensions high ahead of elections
Southern Africa's most controversial country has entered a key period in its turbulent history. With the 29 March election looming, the economy threatening to implode and an intriguing, if probably one-side, three-way tussle for the Presidency lined up, the international spotlight is firmly on Zimbabwe and the stranglehold still held on the landlocked country by President Robert Mugabe.
The pre-election rhetoric has taken on a sinister tone, with the commander of Zimbabwe’s army, General Constantine Chiwenga, warning that he will overturn the constitutional order if President Robert Mugabe loses to 'sell outs and agents of the West’. 'We will not support anyone other than President Mugabe who has sacrificed a lot for this country.
