CURSED BY RICHES
RESOURCES and CONFLICTS in AFRICA

CALL TO PARTICIPATE IN THE
2007 NAIROBI PEACE CONFERENCE

Sadly, Africa is a continent known for its conflicts and human suffering more that anything else. A number of countries including Sudan, Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Somalia, Ethiopia and Sierra Leone have been embroiled in long running conflicts, some dating back to independence. Although the causes of these conflicts have been many and varied over the years, it is those over resources that have proved to be especially enduring. Because of their external linkages and interests, these conflicts have hardly been responsive to local resolution initiatives. Furthermore, the western media, which has largely been responsible for reporting Africa to the world, has often portrayed them as wars by Africans and against Africans.

In recognition of this external dimension gap, Africa Peace Point and Koinonia Community, two pan African peace building organizations and in collaboration with their partners will bring together a panel of eminent African peace builders to examine the interplay between resources and conflicts on the continent and attempt to advance a new peace building paradigm. Prominent western media houses will also be in attendance to interrogate the peace builders and get a first hand African perspective on resource conflicts on the continent from the people at the heart of their resolution.

The conference will take place in Shalom House, Nairobi from 12th to 14th September 2007. It will be followed by a grand peace march, marking the UN international Day of Peace from Kibera slums, the biggest informal settlement in Africa to the historic Uhuru Park, Nairobi on 15th September.

The conference fee is Euro 1000, including accommodation, meals and participation charges. The deadline for registration is 31st July 2007
