Kibaki commits political suicide

When president Mwai Kibaki sacked his entiore cabinet two weeks ago, it was expected that he would eventually come up with an acceptable new team following wide consultations. But was has clearly emerged is that the president ignored the advise from donors, religious societies, and even his predecessor Daniel arap Moi.

His greatest blunder was to shut out members of the orange team from his cabinet, a case of sour grapes following the orange team's win at the November 21 referendum. What Kibaki has forgotten is the fact that it is these same leaders who were behind his grand march to State House. By excluding LDP luminaries from his cabinet, Kibaki has in effect dissolved the coalition that propelled him to power. Besides,he has given them the ammunition with which to fight him, now that they will have a lot of time on their hands.

With more ministers declining to take up their positions, Kibaki will have no option but to dissolve parliament and call for snap elections.
