Civil servants down their tools
3 June 2005 - Zachary Ochieng
Civil servants yesterday went on strike to press for a 600 per cent salary increment. Led by their union secretary general Alfayo Nyakundi, the workers vowed not to return to work until their demands were met.
But Labour minister Newton Kulundu and his Public service counterpart William ole Ntimama have declared the strike illegal and threatened the workers with a sack if they do not report to work today.
The strike mostly paralysed services at public hospitals as doctors and nurses stayed away.
