Interest rates on loans increase poverty among women
Gambian women have bitterly complained about the high rate of interest on loans at a discussion forum organized by the National Women’s Council in Kerewan North Bank Division. The lady counsellor for Jarra Central Aja Ramou Jatta has called on authorities to look into interest rate on loans given to women. She said it is unfair to put interest on loans and as a Muslim State she called on the Islamic leaders to take urgent action to help women. She lamented that they are left with nothing after paying their loans and this would only increase the poverty burden on them rather than reducing it. She however called on the Gambia government to assist women to help improve their welfare and advancement so as to be one of the most advanced in the sub region.
