Kenya: Blue Heart Campaign Inspires Artistes to Raise Awareness About Human Trafficking

NAIROBI---In Kenya, a group of artistes have come together to develop a play to raise awareness about human trafficking. "A Blue Heart, Joy´s story" tells the story of Joy, a young girl who goes to live with her aunt after her parent's unfortunate demise and gets involved in a gripping saga. The theater play, developed by Fern Poetry and the Africa Sanaelimu art Ensemble, was inspired in UNODC´s Blue Heart Campaign.

 The Blue Heart campaign is an awareness raising initiative to fight human trafficking and its impact on society. The campaign seeks to encourage involvement and inspire action to help stop this crime. The result of these objectives are reflected in "A Blue Heart, Joy´s story". The play brings together narration, poetry, music and dance to engage particularly, the young audiences and educated about the dangers of trafficking.

 Bernard Muhia from Fern Poetry has written the poems in the play while Mike Kasongo from Africa Sanaelimu Art Ensemble has choreographed the dances and the music. The music is from traditional African drums beaten to a perfect rhythm to reflect the various moods of the play.

The play was also based on research done by KARDS (Koinonia Advisory Research and Development Services) in 2009 on the proliferation of human trafficking in East Africa. KARDS is also contributing to the production of this play. Written by Luiz Nzomo, "A Blue Heart, Joy´s story" is going to be performed at the Braeburn Theatre on 8th March 2012 and at Kenya National Theatre on 24th March, as well as in high schools and social/community halls. Part of the proceeds from this play will be donated to Red Cross and to create more awareness about human trafficking.
