Farming

Mthunzi Centre is situated on 100 acres of land, most of which is arable. Currently, 20 acres are put under cultivation during the rainy season. There is also a poultry house in which an average of 100 layers and 500 broilers are kept.
The farm is still developing and is increasingly meeting the basic food needs of the children under the Centre’s care.

Mthunzi Centre is situated on a 100-acre piece of land. At the moment, 20 acres of the largely arable farmland are placed under cultivation during the rainy season.
Although the farm is still being developed, it is increasingly approaching the capacity to meet the basic food needs of the children housed at the Centre.

Currently, a project to cultivate the land more intensely for vegetable growing using an irrigation system and a tractor has started. This will soon make Mthunzi self sustainable in the production of vegetables, fruits and maize, and hopefully, some of the produce can be sold to help pay for the children’s extra nutritional needs.
There is also a chicken run for the production of eggs and meat, as well as a piggery.
The farm gives the children an opportunity to learn and appreciate farming, which is an important remunerative activity in Zambia. It will also enable Mthunzi Centre start a formal agricultural training programme.
