Invitation to the 7th Nairobi International Peace Rally

A number of NGOs, CBOs and religious organizations in Kenya wish to invite members of your organization to join us for the 7th Nairobi International Peace Rally to be held on Saturday 16th September, 2006 at Uhuru Park from 7.00 – 1.00 P.M. Africa Peace Point (APP) is coordinating the rally.
16 September 2006

The Rally is an annual event hosted by APP in collaboration with other peace initiatives both within and outside Kenya who share a common desire of a world where people organize to emancipate themselves from all forms of oppression, recognize their social responsibilities, respect each other’s differences, and realize their full potential to enhance a culture of peace. The rally is also organized to coincide with the UN’s International Day of Peace and therefore serves the purpose of annually bringing the world citizens and civil societies together in charting common approaches to issues that need our attention. However, this year’s rally will also take on a special significance as a major pre World Social Forum (WSF) event.

Therefore, in recognition of the WSF and also in support of the various efforts that are being made simultaneously to address poverty in Africa, the theme for the rally is poverty, a threat to peace. By acknowledging that peace is not merely the absence of war and that there can be no peace in the world when more than half the population lives in grinding poverty, the peace rally hopes to recognize and bring to the public realm the various efforts that are simultaneously going on to support the world poor, while at the same time giving visibility to those individuals and organizations that are calling for justice in the world as a first and important step towards resolving the quagmire of poverty.

Looking forward to your participation in the celebration of peace

Yours Faithfully,

Leah Kimathi
